For Whom The Beat Tolls
CanibusMic Club Music

"The Canibus Man will rule forever" were the immortal words from Mike Tyson on Germaine William's classic record "Second Round KO". On "For Whom The Beat Tolls, his eighth album, Canibus whizzes through 16 tracks with potent lyricism, complex rhyme schemes and dope beats. Bis's verbal articulation and usage will have the listener pouring through Merriam Webster's Dictionary. Throughout his 10 year career, he's never been afraid to flaunt his intelligence and engage the masses in critical thinking. On the track "One Ought Not To Think", he expresses concerns about the U.S. government's possible border closings and human extinction. Also, Bis explains his apprehensiveness about technology with the raspy lines, "technology is a blessing but it's also a weapon, a weapon of mass destruction, giving global instructions, teach us how to hate, but do it in a way that we love it."
On "Liquid Swords" produced by Moss, Bis enlists the help of Sun and Killah Priest. Sun's voice is reminiscent of Kool G. Rap and he holds his own amongst the lyricists and outshines the veterans, declaring "zero degree celsius, liquid will freeze, but at any temperature Sun will melt emcees". Priest rhymes unenthusiastically off beat and finishes with a ghoulish laugh. However, Poet Laureate Infinity V003 + VOO4, finds Canibus rhyming seamlessly over a dark, piercing, eerie beat which makes one believe that they're in a horror flick. He rides the tracks with verbal intensity and spits endlessly sans Poet Laureate Infinity. The listener will have to continually replay these tracks to grasp and digest Bis's bars.
"Secrets Among Cosmonauts" is a smooth laid back track which surprisingly meshes well with Canibus's gruff voice. Brisk Fingaz production has Bis spitting nutrients about unity, Hurricane Katrina and how the Russian Astronauts will save society from itself. Even though "For Whom The Beat Tolls" has its share of good songs, "702-386-5397" suffers from a monotonous, annoyingly irritating beat overshadowing his lyrics. "Javelin Fangs" finds Bis preparing for war and warning others to do the same. The uninspiring, repetitive production lessens the song's impact.
The biggest surprise on the album is Ex- Hit Squad Member, "The Incredible Letterman", K-Solo. He assists "The Canibus Man" on "There Has He Been". The innovative rhythms will have fans bobbing their heads while listening to this track. Bis controls the mic with an effortless flow and impressive delivery. K- Solo rhymes are equipped with braggadocio, adulation for appearing on the track and the repercussions of battling the Hip Hop Legend. "For Whom The Beat Tolls" is mental food for the masses accustomed to wanton violence, elementary rhymes and character debasement. Also, this album will appease members of "The Hip Hop Is Dead" Movement.
