Nas To Play Free Concert At Virginia Tech

Nas will join John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band and other artists at "A Concert For Virginia Tech" set to take place September 6 on the university's Blacksburg campus.
The concert will be free to all current VT students, faculty and staff -- as well as those who graduated during the spring and summer semesters -- and will be held at the beginning of the 2007-08 academic year as a way to help the school, community and its students move on from the horrific shooting rampage last April that resulted in the deaths of over 30 students at the hands of English major Cho Seung-Hui.
"We're extremely grateful for the compassion and generosity of these artists who wished to create a very special event where our students, faculty and staff can come together to celebrate the spirit and resiliency of our university community as we begin a new academic year," University President Charles Steger said in a statement.
The artists will not be paid for their performances and a handful of corporate donations will offset the costs of the concert.
"We have a profound respect for the incredible resolve and unwavering sense of hope the university community has shown," DMB drummer Carter Beauford said. "And are honored to have the opportunity to share this evening with Virginia Tech."
