Steph Jones: Heart & Soul

http://www.myspace.com/stephjones2
Aspiring singer-songwriter, and sometime model, Steph Jones, is R&B music’s newest sensation. Born in Houston, but raised in Missouri, Texas, the Mo City Alien, as he refers to himself, is the latest artist to emerge from, the house that Luda built, Disturbing The Peace Records. Having already logged in some serious screen time in videos for chart-toppers; Destiny’s Child [‘Jumpin’ Jumpin’’] and Faith Evans [‘I Love You’], Mr. Jones, who is also the younger brother of comedian DeRay Davis, is busy putting the final touches on his soon-to-be released DTP/Def Jam Records’ solo outing, Mr. Ordinary. HHN Live Dot Com recently caught up with the 24 year old former face of Enyce Clothing...

Todd Davis: When did music first enter into your life?
Steph Jones: I became interested in music at an early age because my mom was a deejay, and my dad was a musician -- He played the keys. Unfortunately for me, every time I would try and sing I would always hear the words, “SHUT UP!” My mom and everyone else was a big fan of “Shut Up!” in the house.
TD: Growing up, who did you listen to?
SJ: Some of my strongest influences were whatever music my mom was playing around the house, whether I knew I was being influenced or not. Artists like Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, The Beatles, Bob Marley, Harry Belafonte, Fleetwood Mac, Boney James... The list goes on and on...
TD: When did you decide to make music your livelihood?
SJ: I decided to take music serious when I was in college.
TD: How did you first hook up with Ludacris, and later ink with his Disturbing The Peace roster?
SJ: In short story form, I started on My Space and built a fan base and respect, then went shopping for record deals. I had a couple of deals on the table, and ended up singing at a comedy club and Ludacris was there... And, the rest was history. P.S., I worked extremely hard to get where I am, so it was no lucky break -- It was just my time. I chose Ludacris and DTP because they were the only label that wasn’t trying to change my style or sound, and I’m not into being a puppet artist.
TD: Sum up for me the style of music that you create?
SJ: My style is classified as ‘My Soul Music,’ because it comes from my soul.
TD: You titled your forthcoming debut, Mr. Ordinary -- How come?
SJ: Well, Mr. Ordinary represents everything that I’ve ever gone through up to this point that makes me the man I am today. I didn’t travel outside of myself to try and do the things I do, it is just my ordinary everyday life.
TD: Lyrically, what inspires you?
SJ: Well my inspiration comes from life and experience, but I do not have a standard to write, I just do it as it comes.
TD: Production-wise, who all did you work with on your debut?
SJ: I worked with Tricky Stewart, All-Star, Ryan Tedder, Whitey and Jared and a few up and coming producers; Chris Warrior and Jhenn. I am very involved in every aspect of creating my album. I wrote 95 percent of the album, and I co-produced 5 songs.
TD: Any highlights, and/or special guest appearances, favorite tracks, etcetera, that you'd like to point out at this particular time?
SJ: I don’t have any features on the album because I wanted the world to experience my artistry in a whole. One of my favorite tracks on the album is my first single, ‘La La (Means Love).’ It is very special because of its true meaning. Most people think it’s about me getting back with my ex, but it has absolutely nothing to do with a relationship. The true meaning is me breaking down my appreciation for freedom, and wanting my life back. I spent two years in a French prison and wasn’t supposed to be released until 2014, so when I got out I learned to appreciate life on a different level... Laaaaaaa Laaaaaaaa!
TD: What do you feel will be the ultimate key to your success in this business?
SJ: It’s really simple -- As long as you can maintain a connection with the fans, you can last forever.
TD: Is there anything else that you’d like to pursue, maybe even outside of music altogether?
SJ: I plan to be in a position of power in the music business within the next 10 years.
TD: Are you happy with the current state of R&B music?
SJ: Yes, I am happy with the current state of R&B because how they say, “Without bad, you wouldn’t be able to appreciate good,” and until then I will continue making real music from my soul.
TD: What would most people be surprised to know about Steph Jones?
SJ: Well, it’s kind of hard to say because I am very honest in my music and in interviews. I guess I would have to say that I really enjoy popping bubble wrap, and people watching in Starbucks.
TD: What do you enjoy doing in your time away from music?
SJ: Honestly I live through my music. It has been the best teacher I’ve ever had, so I don’t stray away from that, besides when I meditate.
TD: Greatest career moment so far?
SJ: Hearing myself on the radio for the first time -- Now that was the best feeling. Like there was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Everyone who knows me knows that I’ve worked really hard to get to this point.
TD: Projecting ahead, what do your future goals & plans entail?
SJ: I see myself heading one of the biggest digital record companies in the business.
TD: What's next for Steph Jones?
SJ: Well, my first single, ‘La La (Means Love)’ is about to hit radios soon, and we will be shooting a video in about a month. The album is due out in the spring.
TD: Are there any plans yet to take the Steph Jones show out on the road anytime soon?
SJ: There are definite plans, but I’m not sure when just yet. I will know in the next few months.
TD: For someone who hasn't experienced the live show, what would you tell them can be expected??
SJ: I guess you can say that I’m like the diet James Brown meets The Beatles! Honestly, my goal is to leave you feeling better than when you came.
TD: Any message for the readers of HHN Live Dot Com?
SJ: I just wanna say to anybody that has any kind of dream that you are working towards, just do it from your heart and soul -- Your soul never lies.
