A So So Disaster: Grand Opening of Studio 72 In Atlanta
As the evening commences with hail-size rain hitting the pavement and flooding half of the east side of Atlanta, who would have guessed that the top industry professionals would have shown up in record numbers…..or did they? The parking lot was filled with media, bartenders and other collective staff to make this venue appear to be as full as it was.
Nestled in the –oh so infamous strip-mall setting, next to Family Dollar, Studio 72 is parked on the streets of Lawrenceville highway on the east side of Atlanta ,Ga. The new brain child of super producer Jermaine Dupri has added to his resume by becoming a night club owner.
On this evening of June 12th, media gathered to take a first glimpse at what was in store for the new nightlife scene in Atlanta. Parked in military fashion were two 2007 Bentley coupes that took most of the attention that evening. Walking into the foyer of the club you had a chance to see the aquarium that was a one-of-a-kind 1100 gallon tank featuring exotic fish, rocks and coral that was a far stretch from your grandmother's aquarium in her front room.
With media in a mode of anxiety for the first celebrity to walk in the door, I knew that this would be a long night to come. As entering into the doors of the club I was greeted by a host of beautiful bartenders in body art smiling and passing out free glasses of Courvoisier.
As the night scurried on from the lackluster number of patrons, it started to appear as if no celebrities were in the building and it was a total waste of time. A room full of over zealous publicists with mediocre rap clients filled the room and overly pretentious patrons with only one thought on their minds and that is to see one glimpse of JD walking to the V.I.P
The clubs is accentuated with 3 bars covered in cheap black marble. The ceiling was covered in black but had significant amounts of holes in it. The stage is centered and elevated above the dance floor, closed in by a brown colored picket fence like structure. Along side of the stage is the DJ booth adjacent to the V.I.P room they call the Chocolate room. In this room there is a bar, along with community style plush seating.
Like most clubs the rest room tends to be a place where comfort is a high priority but walking in to these bathrooms you would have to question if you are in your local Greyhound Bus station. Green walls colored the bathroom with antique style sink fixtures as if it was from the neighborhood flea markets.
As the evening of the less then blissful experience came to an end, there was a slight sighting of Buckey from the VH-1 show "Flavor of Love" at the bar with friends.
Those who made it through were highly disappointed by the evening. By talking to some of the other media professionals, it was suggested that Studio 72 should have waited until they put more money into the venue before opening its doors.

To justify my negative feelings towards my experience at Studio 72 besides the cost of entry, were the cost of the cocktails, the sparsely stocked bar, the condition of the bathrooms and the overall condition of the establishment itself.
My first choice for a cocktail was a Dirty Vodka Martini. The bartender quickly informed us that she couldn't make one because she did not have olives or olive juice. I thought it was a little strange but I quickly got over it. We proceeded to order drinks for ourselves and two of our friends. Tip included, the total for one round was $51.60. I could not believe it. I understand upscale venues and I feel very strongly that you get what you pay for. However, Studio 72 is a far cry from upscale and yet we paid $51.60 for 4 drinks to be served in plastic cups that were so small that the lemon in my Citron Soda was larger than the actual cup itself. Not to mention that the drinks were severely watered down. For the sake of it being too late to travel anywhere where else, we stayed around, ordered 2 more drinks, a Citron Soda and Vodka Redbull, paid $26.00 for those and continued to find issue with Studio 72.
In the women's bathroom, the stall doors were being held up by ELECTRICAL TAPE. $40.00 to get in, $77.60 for a total of 6 watered down drinks and there is ELECTRICAL TAPE holding up the bathroom doors. The electrical tape also served as door handles for the stalls. There was water or wetness all over the floors and one of the stalls had a BUCKET, not a trash can, but a BUCKET, next to the toilet that was overflowing with sopping wet paper towels, napkins, toilet paper and a glass. I cannot convey in words how disgusting the bathroom was. I had NEVER seen anything like it in my entire life. I took a picture so that I could add it my review of Studio 72.
What I find the most disturbing is that fact there are media people actually writing positive reveiws about Studio 72. Are they getting paid to do so or did I just happen to go to a different Studio 72? With the exception of the lobby, I saw nothing that looked as plush as the website photos. Like the filthy bathrooms . . . .why weren't those on the website?
For those of you that know motorcycles, I ride a honda VFR 800 that I change the oil and filter on myself. I am a black woman that is not afraid to get her hands dirty yet I refused to actually use the restroom at Studio 72. I held it until I returned to my girlfriend’s home.
At this point, I can think of nothing more to say about Studio 72 except that it is a rip off. There are simply scamming people out of there time and money.
