Other Side Of The Block: Curtis Stays Winning

A lot of people probably won’t agree with me on this one and I really don’t give a damn, so I’m just gonna put this out there. CURTIS STAYS WINNING. Yeah, I said it. September 11th 2007 is set to go down as the Hip-Hop Clash of the Titans, and it’s pretty obvious to me that Kanye West going to take an “L” in terms of first week numbers and total album sales when Graduation and Curtis hit stores.
The clean version of Graduation leaked today and that will play into the whole Clash of the Titans ordeal. Curtis could probably leak any day now as well, but since Graduation leaked first and since it’s a tad bit more anticipated, most people that want the album will probably have it by 7 pm this evening and 50% of those people won’t see a reason to purchase the album on Sept. 11th (no matter how good it is).
Don’t get me wrong, judging from the album samples, Kanye has put together a better album and I would like to see him outsell Curtis, but there are a lot of people that don’t fuck with Kanye because they think he’s kinda gay. Then again, there are a lot of people that don’t fuck with Curtis because they think he’s kinda gay too, but not because he dresses like a metrosexual but because of that GQ cover, so I guess they’re tied in terms of gayness (pause).
But Curtis is arguably the smartest self-promoting rapper in the history of rap. It’s clear that Curtis starts beef with other rappers to keep his name in the public eye. What other reason does Fiddy have for coming at Weezy on that “Part Time Lover” record? Although most people believe Wayne could take Curtis in a battle, I’d beg to differ. 50 has made a career out of dissing rappers and ethering careers (Ja Rule, Jadakiss, Fat Joe, Cam’ron) and I don’t think Weezy can or has ever put together enough coherent bars and stayed on topic long enough to put a quality diss record together. He never really responded to Gillie Da Kid’s disgruntled ass, besides a few bars here and there. If Wayne really wanted to battle, he would have come at the Clipse a long time ago but he’s basically ignored those dudes, kept getting his money and continued to kiss his daddy (no homo).
Fiddy has taken his share of lumps this year, “Amusement Park” and “Straight To The Bank” were practically duds. That joint with Justin Timberlake was kinda random and that BET performance was a complete disaster. But still, I think Curtis has accumulated more “W’s” than “L’s” in 2007. The moment Curtis dropped “I Get Money” all that other shit got swept under the rug (“W”). He basically said “I run New York” and no one from NYC said a damn thing about it (“W”). You can couple that Ciara video and rumors together for another “W.” Flipping Cam’ron’s “Cuuuuuurtis” into an album title (“W”). The last time we saw Killa Cam, he was in his boxers on the side of a swimming pool and seemed a little discombobulated from his beef with 50 (“W”). And his biggest win of them all…Vitamin Water (“W”). And still, most people will say that Curtis doesn’t stay winning.
I don’t think people really give a shit about album sales anymore, so September 11th isn’t much more than bragging right for two of the biggest egos in hip-hop and I’m gonna go ahead and predict another “W” for Curtis. I never thought the day would come when people would argue about who are the best MCs…Curtis, Weezy and Kanye. Well, I could include T.I. in that equation but hip-hop is so fickle, no one really gives a damn about an artist after he releases a new album (especially a mediocre album like T.I. Vs. T.I.P.), unless that artist is performing a concert in your city or dropped a new music video, let’s say, yesterday. And since T.I. isn’t performing in Atlanta today and since he isn’t releasing a new video either, he’s gonna have to sit this one out. Didn’t Curtis make a couple appearances on T.I.’s Screamfest tour recently? Yeah, that’s another “W” for Curtis. You don’t gotta feel me on this, but Curtis stays winning.
